What is life coaching?

Life coaching is expert guidance for your personal and professional life from a wellness professional who functions like a trusted advisor and wise consultant to help you reach your goals. What is the difference between life coaching and therapy?

Life coaching can feel similar to therapy in the way both approaches address your fears, anxieties, hopes, and aspirations. However, there are key differences between therapy and life coaching.

How Life Coaching Works

As you begin life coaching sessions, you’ll find that your coach does the following:

  • focuses on creating specific objectives to help you bring your desires to life

  • provides accountability to ensure you stay on track to reach your goals

  • helps you troubleshoot potential obstacles and mental blocks as you implement your life strategies

  • recommends ancillary resources or tools that might be helpful for you to achieve your goals

  • makes real life connections or referrals to help catalyze you on your path to growth

  • allows you to schedule sessions as needed based on your growth trajectory

  • offers sessions virtually so you can easily access your coach from the comfort of your home or office.

How Therapy Works

In therapy, your clinician will take a more structured approach that will does the following:

  • focuses on reducing your negative symptoms and the stressors interfering with your life

  • provides insight to help you overcome pain from the past or dysfunctional patterns of behavior in the present

  • helps you understand the history of your presenting challenges

  • maintains structured weekly sessions for consistent healing and growth

  • allows you to potentially submit super bills to your insurance company for reimbursement (see our care coordinator for your specific payment options)

  • offers in-person or virtual Telehealth sessions based on your preference and availability.

Who is a candidate for life coaching?

Anyone who wants a happier, more meaningful life is a candidate for life coaching. We also recommend professionals work with our life coach for “executive coaching” that focuses on helping you improve your performance and experience specifically within your workplace or career.

Many of our clients enjoy life coaching within the context of regular weekly psychotherapy sessions with any member of our expert team of mental health care providers. We work with you to set your objectives and provide ongoing accountability and support to help you break through the barriers keeping you from the life you hope to live. 

In addition, at Healthy Minds NYC we also have a dedicated life coaching program with our co-founder, Chanel Dokun who is the author of Life Starts Now: How to Create the Life You’ve Been Waiting For. You can select from the following three options for life coaching with Chanel Dokun:

Option One: Monthly Life Coaching Sessions (Virtual)

Through monthly life coaching with Chanel Dokun, you will get clarity around the various spheres of your life in an open-ended coaching format. You’ll meet with your life coach for one-hour virtual sessions where you will audit your life, set goals for the future, and get consistent accountability and support to overcome the mental and practical barriers keeping you from the life you want. You may be given short growth assignments to complete outside of sessions as needed as further support for your goals and to deepen your new life habits.

Life coaching at Healthy Minds NYC includes monthly or bi-monthly 1-hour sessions, optional recordings of sessions, and a custom playbook of recommended next actions and growth assignments.

Option Two: 2-Day Life Planning Retreat

At Healthy Minds NYC, we offer a special life coaching program through the structure 2-Day Life Planning Retreat (virtual or in-person). The life planning framework is based on the Purpose Discovery Framework outlined in Chanel Dokun’s book Life Starts Now. During this process you will do the following:

  • put language to your zone of genius by discovering your talents so you know what you do exceedingly well,

  • explore your passions by clarifying your life mission and heart focus so you know your "North Star” in life,

  • and craft your strategic life plan by learning how to steward your influence so you know exactly what to do next.

Life planning at Healthy Minds NYC includes a one-on-one guided retreat, a digital Self-Reflection Workbook with access to personality assessments, and a Life Action Plan with a recap of your retreat and next actions.

Option Three: 2-Day Life Planning Retreat + Coaching

Many of our clients enjoy combining the catalytic process of life planning with ongoing coaching. If you are seeking maximum transformation for you life, we recommend you begin your life coaching journey with a 2-Day Life Planning Retreat. This intensive will give you optimal perspective on who you are and where you’re headed. Then you can schedule monthly or bi-monthly follow-up coaching sessions to hold you accountable as you begin to implement new life rhythms.

Life Planning with Implementation Coaching at Healthy Minds NYC includes a one-on-one guided retreat, a digital Self-Reflection Workbook, a Life Action Plan, and 3 to 6 follow-up 1-hour coaching sessions.
